Random Access Memory (RAM) is a type of computer storage whose contents can be accessed in a fixed amount of time, regardless of where the data is located in memory¹. RAM is one of the essential hardware components in a computer. It serves as a temporary storage for data and programs that are currently being executed by the computer.
RAM consists of various parts or components, such as memory chips, memory modules, and others. Memory chips are the primary components in RAM responsible for storing data and programs being executed by the computer. Memory modules are a collection of memory chips mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB).
There are different types of RAM, such as SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, and DDR4. SDRAM is the most commonly used type of RAM. SDRAM is affordable and durable. DDR has a higher speed compared to SDRAM. DDR2 has a higher speed compared to DDR. DDR3 has a higher speed compared to DDR2. DDR4 is the newest type of RAM with a higher speed compared to DDR3.
Choosing the right RAM should be done carefully. This is necessary to prevent diminishing the capabilities of RAM from optimal performance. To be more effective, the RAM used should align with the requirements and strike a balance between available resources and the applications being run.
RAM is a crucial hardware component in the world of computing. With RAM, data and programs being executed by the computer can be stored temporarily. Therefore, selecting the right RAM is extremely important to support optimal RAM performance.
